About

We never encounter content without form. Things are emphasized, held back, altered, added, placed in relation to one another, or left out. How something appears shapes what we read into it, how we understand it, and how we respond to it. Form does not simply make content visible or easier to understand; it becomes part of what it means.

For me, design therefore does not begin with design, but by asking what something is for: Why should it be made, and what can design contribute to it? Behind it are content and contexts, people and histories, perspectives and interests that first need to be understood.
There are many ways something can take form. But not everything that is possible makes sense. Design therefore also means making decisions. The question is what a particular form can contribute in a particular context. What does it make visible or understandable? What relationships does it enable?

Design, then, does not simply give an idea or intention a pretty form. It helps clarify what is essential and find ways for others to understand or experience it. And sometimes, something new emerges that was not there or imaginable before.
